Aeon Clash is an arcade racer in the style of "Mario Kart". It was created by five people in four months for CPSC 585 (Game Programming) at the University of Calgary. Aeon Clash was written in C++ and uses PhysX by Aegia for its physics system.
The Story
In the far-flung future, the advent of faster-than-light travel has made intergalactic warfare a way of life. All across the universe, planets are laid to waste, and countless alien races are annihilated every day. Brokering a lasting peace between countless warring factions seems impossible, but if something is not done soon, the destruction of the very universe is assured. So, in desperation, the strongest remaining races came together to make a pact: The fate of the universe will be decided through the noble pastime of space-racing.
On the eve of the new millennium, each species will send their champion to race for the honor of their homeworld. The winner will assume control of the universal federation and the unquestioned authority that comes with it. The losers will have no choice but to bow before the cruel will of the victor. Get ready for the Aeon Clash!
The Gameplay
As mentioned above, Aeon Clash is an arcade racer. This means that your objective is to go from last place to first by any means necessary. In this case, "any means" involves a variety of weaponry, including the ever-popular heat-seeking missile and the obligatory-but-useless landmine. In a pinch, you can even use your vehicle as a weapon by shoving your rivals off the track and into the lava below. In Aeon Clash, weapons like these serve two purposes - not only do they slow your opponents down, but they also cause damage to their shields. When a craft's shields fall to zero, it (along with its rider) are destroyed. In this way, Aeon Clash offers two paths to victory - be the first to cross the finish line, or simply annihilate the opposition - the choice is yours.
Developer's Commentary
I am really quite proud of Aeon Clash. For a game that was made by five strangers - many of whom had never even programmed a game before - in four months, I think it's exceptional. Not only does it look good, it's fun to play, too. The heat-seeking rocket in particular provides some great moments, whether you're firing it at an escaping craft just before they jump the bridge, or getting smacked from behind just as you were about to cross the finish line.
