In the year 21XX, humanity's peaceful isolation was shattered by the arrival of the Spek'Tral armada – an alien war machine hellbent on subjugating the Earth and all of its inhabitants. Though the forces of Earth fought valiantly against the invading Spek'Tral, the tide of war quickly turned against them. In a last-ditch attempt at survival, the Earth Defense Coalition brought together three of the planet's most celebrated spacefighters to form an elite fighting force codenamed "Prism Squad".
Through a series of daring tactical strikes, Prism Squad accomplished the impossible; they crippled the Spek'Tral's supply lines, forcing an emergency retreat. Following their victory over the Spek'Tral, Prism Squad left the Earth for parts unknown, vowing to pursue the remnants of the Spek'Tral forces wherever they fled.
Centuries have passed since then, and the children of Earth have all but forgotten the horrors of war. But one fateful day, when a Spek'Tral scouting party is unexpectedly spotted hovering near Venus, the Earth Defense Coalition realizes that their planet is in peril once again. With heavy hearts, the Earth Defense Coalition sends a distress signal to their protectors in the sky: "Prism Squad! Come in Prism Squad! The Earth needs your help once more!"
Prism Squad: GO! is a three-player shoot-'em-up video game in which you and two partners work together to defeat the villainous Spek'Tral. Prism Squad: GO! was developped in C++, and uses Nintendo Wiimotes to play.
This time around, the Spek'Tral will stop at nothing to destroy the Earth – they’ve outfitted their kamikaze pilots with advanced shielding technologies which are invulnerable to conventional weapons. Luckily for the Earth, each member of Prism Squad commands a spaceship infused with Prism Power – the mysterious power which infuses their laser-blasts with chromatic energy. When a laser’s chromatic wavelength is precisely attuned to the color of a Spek’Tral warship it can neutralize the shield and destroy the ship before it harms the planet! (In other words, the red player shoots red lasers which destroy red UFOs. Get it?)
When the Spek’Tral dispatches orange, green, purple and white spacefighters, Prism Squad must combine their Prism Powers to succeed. When two or more players hold down the ‘A’ button on their Wiimotes, their colors will automatically combine, causing their ships to shoot the lasers of the combined color. Be careful though! If you press ‘A’ while your partners' are trying to blend a specific color, you may inadvertently ruin their plans. In Prism Squad: GO! communication and teamwork are your keys to success!
The aesthetic of Prism Squad: GO! draws inspiration from campy Japanese movies and video games circa 1980. The notion of a colored-coded fighting-force who combine their powers to defeat extraterrestrial enemies was inspired by old Japanese TV series such as Voltron and Super Sentai. Commander Wolfgang - Prism Squad's liason to the Earth Defense Coalition - pays homage to such classically-mistranslated Japanese video games as Zero Wing with his campy dialog, two-frame "flappy head" animation, and gratuitous use of exclamation marks.
